The fishing continues to be hot in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo with most boats reporting a daily average of 6 BILLFISH strikes per day. The blue water has moved within 3 miles of shore making for a very short run to the action.
Over the past week the waters have warmed up which has really improved the SAILFISH bite but has put a damper on the recent MARLIN activity. There were no MARLIN reported this past week.
The DORADO bite has also improved with several fish per day per boat being reported. The average size of the DORADO are in the 20-30 lb range.
Inshore the warm clear waters have made fishing for ROOSTERFISH difficult allbeit several nice ROOSTERFISH were reported for last week. The inshore action continues to be dominated by large YELLOWTAIL JACKS and SPANISH MACKEREL . MEGA baits continue to be the hot lure for them while live bait and Red and White Pencil Poppers continue to be the best bet for ROOSTERFISH.

Years.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Cool mornings and clear skies warming to around 86°F, calm seas with a light breeze.
Sea Surface Temp: 28-29°C
The Zihuatanejo area is finally coming alive with terrific inshore and offshore action that seemed to start with the waning full moon phase.
Starting late last week, according to Captain Temo Verboonen, skipper of the Secuestro De Amor, the SAILFISH were moving long distances in a single day, showing really well for just a day and then completely moving to another area by the next day. Little by little, the bite was taking off and a few MARLIN were starting to show up.
Captain Adolfo, Dos Hermanos, reported 1 SAILFISH for 8 sails raised on the fly; and Captain Temo reported 2 BLUE MARLIN, (one over 400 lbs) and 13 SAILFISH releases. Marfel reported 15 raises and 4 sails on the fly for 6 days fishing.
Inshore, the JACK CREVALLE and SIERRA are plentiful, along with many BONITO. By mid week, the blue water just kept getting closer and closer and the captains were reporting 6-9 SAILFISH strikes per day, in conjunction with a few DORADO and MARLIN.
Captain Temo reported superb flyfishing with angler Theodore
Krishisky from Washington State, that produced 54 SAILFISH raised
with 33 casts for presentation, 15 sails missed, 2 broken off, 7 landed
and release and 4 MARLIN. In short, the opportunities were everywhere
for the anglers and for the first time in awhile, Temo sounded excited
about the report.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Mostly sunny and warm, temps from
68°F nights to 91°F daytime highs.
Sea
Conditions: Still pretty flat calm with some light westerly tropical
breezes, temps at 81°F inshore and 83°F offshore.
Best Fishing Area: Starting at about
5 miles offshore
Best Lure/Bait: Teasers in the pink & purple working
very well for raising the SAILFISH. Megabaits working well inshore.
Rigged trolling baits are hot for the sails, too.
Please receive our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
The mid-week bite on SAILFISH out to the west of Zihuatanejo Bay was producing well from about 15 miles off, as the water became cleaner and warmer, (82°F). The areas out to the south and southwest were very slow with off-colored greenish waters and temps at about 80 degrees. Even the JACK CREVALLE were offshore some 10-plus miles and it made fishing difficult and confusing, not knowing if the strike was a SAILFISH or JACK CREVALLE.
No MARLIN reported for the week.
The area is alive with BONITO as the sardinas
moved into the area with the cooler inshore waters which should begin
to reflect an improved fishing result after the full moon phase.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Sunny, warm and pleasant climate.
Temps from 69°F nights to 90°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Mostly calm waters this week but streaky water
conditions, cooler off to the south & southwest and warmer out to the west.
Sea Surface Temp: 28°C
Best Fishing Area: Out to the west, starting at about 10 miles and
beyond.
Best Bait/Lure: Rapala Magnums working best for the JACK CREVALLE and SAILFISH.
Seemed like the downrigger trolled rigged baits and rapalas were doing
the job well.
Captain Temo Verboonen reported slow and difficult fishing this week for most of the boats, with lots of greenish and off-colored water extending out to 26 miles and beyond. He reported only a couple of smaller MARLIN for the week and "very lazy SAILFISH" that for the most part, just wouldn't bite at all.
While there were lots of BONITO all over,
the ROOSTERFISH and JACK CREVALLE completely vanished
from the area. Overall, he said it was a very difficult fishing week
for both, the anglers and the crews.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Partly cloudy days, temps from 69°F
nights to 91°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Generally a calm week with light tropical
surface winds, temps at about 80°F all over and mostly green, off-colored
waters.
Sea Surface Temp: 27°C
The effect of the full moon had hampered the fishing for the early week period, but all is back to the regular super bite that was taking place just prior to the full moon.
According to Captain Temo Verboonen,
the SAILFISH and DORADO action is a couple of notches above
excellent and the inshore JACK CREVALLE action has simultaneously
come alive, too. He
said it's settling down to the really good fishing that the customers
want when they get there.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Lots of sunshine with a few scattered
clouds, temps from 73°F nights to 92°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Calm seas, very little swell,
temps at 80°F inshore and rising to 84°F offshore.
Best Fishing Area: Beginning at the edge of the blue
water at about
10 miles out from the bay.
Best Bait/Lure: Slow-trolled rigged baits
best for the BILLFISH and DORADO, too. The inshore action
was best on red & white
pencil poppers and the JACK CREVALLE were very eager to bite.
The coming full moon has dampened the bite at Zihuatanejo, according to our local contact, Captain Temo Verboonen. While the water remains "good and clear", the fish bite backed off from the prior weeks fast action and there is no bait or bird activity reflecting game fish.
On
the inshore side of things, the SPANISH MACKEREL, BONITO and
JACK CREVALLE were plenty active for the light tackle enthusiasts
and spanned a broad area. The ROOSTERFISH bite moved between the
rocks between Zihuatanejo and Playa Larga, and has been the "hot spot" for
the week. The big bite is expected to jump right back on course as the
full moon phases darker.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Partly cloudy and warm days, temps
from 71°F nights to 94°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Calm waters, remaining deep blue and clean, temps
from 84°F to 85°F throughout the area.
Best Fishing Area: Generally, in the same areas as last week, starting
at about 8 miles from the bay.
Our local Zihuatanejo contact, Captain Temo Verboonen, reported very good fishing in the area and very close to the bay. The boats are having multiples of SAILFISH strikes everyday now and combining a few DORADO in the catches for dinner. The entire area has "come alive" with fast action, with good reports on ROOSTERFISH, and JACKS for the inshore fishing.
Secuestro De Amor reported 4 SAILFISH and 2 DORADO for a single fishing day and Duquesa contributed 4 SAILFISH and 1 DORADO for a single fishing day.
Bloody Hook reported 2 SAILFISH and 2 DORADO for
a single day and Dos Hermanos I reported many JACKS and
ROOSTERFISH and with double digits on SAILFISH. According
to Temo, the action has made a significant change for the better and
the coming days will be very good action for the anglers.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Partly cloudy days and very good overall
weather, with temps ranging from 72°F nights to 91°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Water temps are very good and holding stable at
86°F degrees with glassy calm surface conditions.
Best Fishing Area: Cobalt blue water is
just 7 miles from the bay and the fishing begins at that point for the BILLFISH.
Best Bait/Lure: ROOSTERFISH, YELLOWTAIL JACKS, SPANISH
MACKEREL bite
the spoons & poppers,
which has worked better than trolling. BILLFISH and DORADO best
on rigged baits.
Captain Temo Verboonen, our local reporter for Zihuatanejo, says, "The weather has finally changed for the better, with the passing of Tropical Storm Odile. The ocean is calm, the waters are blue and clear within a half-mile of the entrance to the Bay, and the SAILFISH are going crazy with 4-7 strikes per day. Now, more anglers are fishing the area and the season has officially started."
For the inshore action, Temo says, "ROOSTERFISH are all over the coast, right now."
The full moon hasn't hampered the fishing at all and the skippers
have been anxiously awaiting this phase when they can stop the
boat work and go back to fishing.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Warm and humid, temps from 73°F nights
to 92°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Flattened out and not much swell, light tropical
surface winds, temps at 84-85°F (32°C) throughout the area, and clean
water just a half-mile from the entrance to the Bay.
Bait Supply: Remained good even through the full moon
Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits for the BILLFISH and DORADO have
been the primary ticket.
According to Captain Temo Verboonen, our local representative for
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, the fishing has been getting better and better
over the past 10 days, with good water temperatures and water clarity
at just 10 miles. Temo says the ocean is still pretty rough on
some days and the rains are still coming down in squalls, but
the fish don't seem to mind, at all. The hardest part about this
time frame is the lack of anglers in the area, but for those that do
go out, the catches have been very good and reflected plenty of SAILFISH and
quality-sized DORADO (the latter averaging 30 lbs or so). The
inshore fishing has also improved considerably, especially in
the nearby area of Morros de Potosí, which is producing big RAINBOW
RUNNERS,
YELLOWTAIL JACKS, ROOSTERFISH, and even a few YELLOWFIN
TUNA. He
pointed out that we are now coming into the POMPANO season, when
the fish start biting well on live anchovetas and small sardinas. Overall,
the picture for top-notch action from Zihuatanejo is unquestionably on
the very bright side.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Climate: Mostly cloudy with some scattered
thunderstorms, especially in the late PM & nights, humid, temps
from 73°F nights to 91°F daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Some rough and bumpy days, but conditions
are improving with each passing day. Sea surface temps at 85-86°F,
good clarity outside 10 miles.
Best Fishing Area: Inshore is good for the ROOSTERFISH,
RAINBOW RUNNERS and YELLOWTAIL JACKS and the offshore waters becoming very productive for bigger DORADO and SAILFISH.
Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits best in the offshore waters
and smaller live bait in the inshore waters, along with pencil poppers,
(red/ white working well).
According to Captain Temo Verboonen, Secuestro De Amor, the fishing has been very good this week and the only downside is the lack of anglers. He reports a good ROOSTERFISH bite and a big school of NEEDLEFISH passing through that cut a lot of poppers and terrorized the bait schools. He reported 4 ROOSTERFISH, 2 SAILFISH and 5 JACK CREVALLE for the Secuestro de Amor.
Dos Hermanos II reported 2 SAILFISH and the Dos Hermanos
I reported 13 ROOSTERFISH and 4 JACK CREVALLE. All
reporting for single fishing days.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Mostly cloudy, temps from
73 nights to 90 daytime highs, PM and night rains
Sea Conditions: Mostly
calm, temps at 87 throughout the area, clean & blue from 2 miles out of the harbor.
Sea Surface Temp: 29-30°C
Bait Supply: Good
After a sluggish start to the week, the offshore SAILFISH bite increased dramatically. Our captains are reporting 3 - 4 SAILFISH per day per boat and the warm blue water is within 1 mile of shore.
The real action continues to be the wide open inshore ROOSTERFISH bite south of Zihuatanejo Bay near San Valentín.
Returning New Jersey anglers Ron & Jeff
Reinhardt fishing 3 days aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 with Captain
Adolfo landed 23 ROOSTERFISH in the 15 - 50 lb class as well as
2 large YELLOWTAIL JACKS. On day number 1 Jeff’s third
cast using a Yozuri Pink and Yellow Surfacxe Cruiser, was engulfed by
a monster ROOSTER. After nearly an hour the fish was landed and
scaled 105.6 lbs. ( 48 kilos ) The fish was caught using a Shimano Stratic
6000 reel and Power Pro 30 lb test line. The fish measured 64” long
with a girth of 36”.
Congratulations on a very unique catch!
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Overcast
mornings with brief rain at night.
Sea Conditions: Calm in the morning
but moderate with the afternoon winds.
Sea Surface Temp: 29-30°C
Bait Supply: Good
While the full moon had a definite negative effect on the offshore bite, the inshore fishery exploded into some indescribable ROOSTERFISH action.
Captain Adolfo reported day long action along the south beaches nearly San Valentín. In 4 days Captain Adolfo reported raising 96 ROOSTERFISH to the fly landing 8.
Captain Temo using conventional gear recorded a 7 ROOSTERFISH day, and Captain Cheva also using conventional gear reported an 8 ROOSTERFISH day along with several YELLOWTAIL JACKS. The ROOSTERFISH are averaging 30 lbs and are really aggressive to a top water pencil popper.
The SAILFISH bite was sluggish but some nice sized DORADO were reported in the weekly catch report.
Because of the full moon our captains
reported a good bite early and late but the late morning and middle part
of the day was void of any action. The blue water is
still inside the bay.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Mild temps, humid, little wind
Sea Conditions: Calm
Sea Surface Temp: 29°C
Bait Supply: Good
Near perfect inshore and offshore conditions were the order of the day in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo last week.
Captain Chiro on the Bloody Hook led the way as he reported landing 10 YELLOWFIN TUNA for angler Mr. Peltier. Mr. Thein, also fishing aboard the Bloody Hook, landed 1 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO and lost 2 MARLIN in one offshore day.
First time visitor to Ixtapa Mr. Corey Bear landed 2 SAILFISH in 1 day with Captain Chiro, who finished the week with another 2 SAILFISH-1 DORADO day.
Captain Temo on the Secuestro reported 3 ROOSTERFISH and 1 (15 lb) BIGEYE JACK in 1 inshore day, and 2 YELLOWFIN TUNA and 3 SAILFISH in 2 offshore trips.
Captain Adolfo fished inshore and reported 15 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 11 ROOSTERFISH along with some good light tackle action on BONITOS.
Captain Chico on the Llamarada landed the largest fish of the week: a 300-lb BLUE MARLIN.
The blue water is virtually in the
bay at this time and BILLFISH conditions could not be better.
We still have some excellent availability in the upcoming months.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Sunny days, a hint of humidity, light sprinkle
at week's end
Sea Conditions: Calm
Sea Surface Temp: 29°C
Bait Supply: Excellent
Windy conditions, cold water coupled with very light angling activity made for a short fishing report last week in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. Our captain did report some fair to better-than-average SAILFISH activity along with some MARLIN as well. The YELLOWFIN TUNA are reported to be beyond the 50-mile mark.
Inshore the action is mixed with CHULAS, SPANISH MACKEREL and some ROOSTERFISH and JACKS in the mix.
First-time visitor to I/Z , Mr. Ross, had an action-packed inshore day aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 landing 1 nice ROOSTERFISH and losing 2 others, along with 5 SPANISH MACKEREL, 4 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 2 POMPANO and numerous BONITOS. On his second day Mr. Ross decided to go offshore with Captain Adolfo, and after landing 1 SAILFISH just after leaving Zihuatanejo Bay, hooked a 500-lb BLUE MARLIN on 20-lb test. The battle started at 8:40 a.m. and lasted to 5: 40 p.m. It was an exceptional catch on 20-lb test!
We still have very good dates available for the Summer
Roosterfish Season.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Windy, one night of brief
light rain
Sea Conditions: Moderate to Rough
Sea Surface Temp: 26°C
Bait Supply: Good
The oncoming moon brought with it some super MARLIN fishing as our captains reported many strikes just 8-10 miles offshore. Even with light angling pressure, an average of 5-6 MARLIN were caught each day last week.
Just a bit farther out, the SAILFISH bite remains respectable as Captain Chiro on the Bloody Hook reported 7 SAILFISH for 3 offshore days. Captain Chiro also reported 4 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, Several nice CHULAS and a mixed bag of BONITO for 1 inshore day.
Captain Adolfo also
reported the start of the ROOSTERFISH bite as he landed 4-5
each day. The fish were in the 20-25 lb range. There was also a noticeable
increase in the number of baitfish in the area which is a sure sign that
the inshore fishing will pick up in the weeks ahead.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo
Weather: Mild temps, mostly clear sunny days, but the first rain
of the season fell last Monday evening.
Sea Conditions: Calm to Moderate
Sea Surface Temp: 27°C
Bait Supply: Excellent
Very light angling activity coupled with changing fishing conditions made for a difficult picture in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo last week. Our captains reported that the blue water made wide movements last week and water temps continue to be below normal as several pods of KILLER WHALES were spotted just outside the bay.
Captain Chiro on the Bloody Hook posted a 7-SAILFISH day and ended the week with14 SAILFISH and 1 BLUE MARLIN released for 4 days of offshore fishing as well as some very good inshore action on BONITO and AMBERJACKS.
Captain Rafa on the Vamonos 2 reported 7 SAILFISH for 2 days offshore.
Captain Adolfo reported 7 ROOSTERFISH to 25 lbs in two inshore days while Captain Cheva reported 6 SAILFISH in 2 offshore days.
Our captains also reported a 450 lb BLACK MARLIN and several smaller BLUE MARLINS for the week.
Summertime has historically
been the very best time for wide open ROOSTERFISH action. We still
have available dates and skippers.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Sunny, mild
temps
Sea Conditons: Calm
Sea Surface Temp: 26-27°C
Bait Supply: Good
Changeable conditions still exist in Ixtapa-Zihautanejo as the spring turnover to warmer water conditions just does not want to set up. This has resulted in inconsistent days with some days providing good action while the very next day is void of any. It remains a puzzling situation. On the better days our captains are reporting 2 - 4 shots at SAILFISH with some DORADO mixed in as well.
Inshore, Captain Adolfo reports wide open action on big SPANISH MACKEREL up at Las Saladitas. Good YELLOWTAIL JACK and small ROOSTERFISH have also been present.
Very few MARLIN and no YELLOWFIN TUNA were reported last week.
Tomorrow starts the Annual Billfish Tournament, and with
an expected field of 100+ boats we should get a good idea of the the
bite when the tournament ends on Sunday.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Sunny most days with a bit of clouds
starting to show up.
Sea Conditions: Calm
Sea Surface Temp: 26-27°C
Bait Supply: Good
Very changeable conditions were the order of the day last week in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. Those changing conditions brought with them inconsistent action as one day would find large concentrations of SAILFISH and then the next they would be gone.
Best single day was turned in by returning New Jersey angler Mr. Herb Houghton who landed 4 SAILFISH and lost 2 others while fishing with Captain Adolfo on the Dos Hermanos 1.
Not to be outdone, Captain Chiro on the Bloody Hook also posted a 4-SAILFISH day while fishing with angler Mr. Shtob. Captain Chiro also reported 3 other SAILFISH for three offshore days and a mixed bag of YELLOWTAIL JACKS, AMBERJACKS, SPANISH MACKEREL and CHULAS for 2 inshore days.
Captain Omero also fishing 1 inshore day reported 4 big SPANISH MACKEREL, 1 YELLOWTAIL JACK and a handful of BONITOS.
The inshore fishing was severely affected by high tides and large swells.
Captain Temo on the Secuestro reported 3 SAILFISH in 2 offshore days while Captain Rafa on the Vamonos 1 led angler Mr. White to a beautiful 40 lb BULL DORADO.
The blue water has moved to beyond the 15-mile mark with most of the good SAILFISH activity occurring in the green water between 8 and 15 miles. There is also another hot bite at the 1000 fathom curve (25 miles offshore).
No MARLIN or TUNA activity
was reported last week.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Weather: Sunny temps in the
high 80's
Sea Conditions: Moderate
Sea Surface Temp: 26-27°C
Bait Supply: Fair
